The Poetics of Independence: Exiled Jesuits, Enlightened Governance and the Contested Futures of Spanish America

Luis Ramos is a scholar whose research primarily focuses on the cultures of enlightened governance and sociability in the eighteenth-century Atlantic world. His current book project examines how exiled Jesuits from New Spain crafted a patriotic vocabulary that foresaw the emergence of a new concept of sovereignty rooted in the experience of Catholic and multiracial societies.
