The Embodiment of Struggle in Greater Sao Paulo-Workers' Health, Gender, and Disability as Crucibles of Citizenship

Sofie studies embodiment as a form of identity formation and collective resistance at the intersections of disability, race, class, and gender. Her dissertation examines how Greater São Paulo labor unionist’s defense of their health following Brazil’s “Economic Miracle” (1967-1976) and disability activists’ debates over dignified labor throughout the 1980s expanded bodily norms of class struggle and citizenship. Her work has been generously supported by a Fulbright-Hays DDRA grant and additional funding from the Wenner-Gren Foundation, the American Historical Association, and the Conference on Latin American History.
