Chinese Lessons: Weaponized Understanding, National Security, and Humanistic Empire in US-China Relations, 1898–1953

Dang Weiyu studies the histories of race, empire, and liberalism that shape US foreign relations. His dissertation examines how early twentieth-century US attachments to China channeled anxieties over national purpose and virtue into a notion of security suffusing military, cultural, and economic expansion with moral claims of sympathy, responsibility, and tolerance. He was a Public Humanities Fellow at the Modern Language Association and currently co-coordinates the Graduate Student Working Group of the Asian/Pacific/American Institute at NYU.
