Doctoral Student Fellow

Ph.D. Candidate, English

Timothy Pantoja is a doctoral candidate in the English department who engages Black Studies, performance studies, and art theory to explore literature’s power to bind. His dissertation, “Compelling Insinuations: Black Reflections on Empathy”, explores how paintings, lyric poetry, and narrative fiction by modernist Black artists depict empathy as embodied absorption with objects and phenomena of a shareable world that mediate vital bonds with others, present and absent, living and dead. He received a M. Div from Harvard Divinity School, where he began studying connections between artistic engagement, theology, and psychoanalysis
