Arts and Humanities Research

The Center for the Humanities, in partnership with the Office of the Vice Provost for Research, is pleased to share this Call for Proposals: Arts and Humanities Research, an internal funding program intended to support innovative and consequential scholarship and creative practices across the arts and humanities at NYU.

This grant program offers awards to help outstanding faculty advance their work at any stage of a project’s development, including, but not limited to: exploring new ideas; developing new collaborations; pursuing interdisciplinary, public-facing, creative, archival and/or field-based projects; strengthening proposals for external funding; or disseminating significant scholarly, artistic, and creative contributions.

Funding and Duration

Award Amount: Up to $25,000 per project
Project Duration: Up to 18 months (up to 1 no-cost extension is allowed)

Overview and Expected Outcomes
This program provides flexible funding for faculty-led projects in the arts and humanities. Applicants may use this funding to:

  • Pioneer innovative research or creative approaches in the arts and humanities;
  • Explore and build interdisciplinary collaborations across NYU’s schools and global sites;
  • Deepen understanding of societal challenges and their impacts through the lens of the arts and humanities;
  • Advance significant publications, exhibitions, performances, or other forms of scholarly and artistic engagement, including work for broader public audiences; and/or
  • Prepare for external grant applications.

Funding may be used for a range of activities, such as research project planning, archival or field-based research, literature review, materials and supplies, grant writing and editing, undergraduate researchers, travel, convenings, book editing and translation costs, publication costs, and digital and creative production costs. Proposals may also request funding to foster community partnerships; however, subawards to other institutions are not permitted.

Eligibility

Full-time faculty (tenured, tenure-track, and contract) in New York, Abu Dhabi, and Shanghai campuses are eligible to serve as PI and Co-PI. The Lead PI must have Principal Investigator status at NYU for the proposed project.
